RUM RELEASE AT ST. AUGUSTINE DISTILLERY
Sept. 3: The St. Augustine Distillery, 112 Riberia St., unveils its first Discovery Series of rum — fermented and distilled on-site from select regional sugarcane syrups and molasses in copper pot stills and the barrel-aged for a distinct flavor profile. The St. Augustine Distillery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, with FREE guided tours and tastings every half hour. Admission is FREE. EL GALEON SHIP REPLICA TOURS
Sept. 3-23: El Galeón, the authentic replica of a ship that traveled the coasts of Florida 500 years ago, will again sail into Matanzas Bay from Sept. 3-23, 2015, for St. Augustine’s 450th Anniversary, offering tours and the opportunity to glimpse back into maritime history by walking the decks and wandering through the ships quarters. El Galeón, a 170-foot, 495-ton authentic wooden replica of a Spanish galleon, is owned and operated by the Nao Victoria Foundation of Seville, Spain. Twenty-eight crew members must maneuver more than 9,600 square feet of sail area in the same fashion as 16th century sailors. Docked at the St. Augustine Municipal Marina, 111 Avenida Menendez, El Galéon will be open daily for tours. Tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for youth age 5 to 12, and free for youth under age 5. CELEBRATE 450 KICK-OFF CONCERT with Aviles, Spain performers
Sept. 3: St. Augustine’s 405th festivities begin with a free kick-off concert from 7 to 10 p.m. at Lewis Auditorium at Flagler College, 14 Granada St., downtown St. Augustine. The event feature three bands from Aviles, Spain, St. Augustine’s sister city, performing together to bring the culture and music of Spain to St. Augustine. The three bands include: Tejedor, an Asturian fold band, Los Morrigans, an Asturian Spanish pop band, and Alexandra in Grey, a Spanish Indie Rock artist. Admission is FREE.
GILDED AGE FASHION SHOW & TOURS
Opens Sept. 4: Visitors to Flagler College’s Ponce Hall will be offered a more detailed glimpse into 19th century life with the college’s “Gilded Age Fashion Show,” an event showcasing the period garb with patterns from 1888, the year the Hotel Ponce de Leon opened. “We are building these costumes from scratch,” said Elaina Wahl-Temple, a Theatre Arts professor and the head costumer of the department, who worked with five students on the exhibit. “We’re trying to show the public how the people of this time wore these clothes, especially the ladies.” The clothes that will be exhibited are the kind that the wealthy visitors of the Hotel Ponce de Leon would have worn — layers upon layers of garments, such as pantaloons, corsets and bustles. Unlike today, people, especially of the upper class, would have changed several times daily. Both women and men’s clothing will be exhibited. The collection will be unveiled at 4 and 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4 in the Flagler College Rotunda, 74 King St., and will be on display in the Flagler Room beginning Sept. 12, as a part of the college’s historic tours. Sept. 4: On the First Friday in September, The Art Galleries of St. Augustine will celebrate the historic founding of the Oldest City with a special 450 Minutes of Art Walk. Participating members will offer extended hours of First Friday Art Walk — from 1:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4. Oct. 23-25: A one-act musical version of the old folk tale with a good lesson about trust and ingenuity – Stone Soup will be performed by 3rd-6th grade students at Limelight Theatre, 11 Old Mission Ave., uptown St. Augustine. Performances are 5 p.m. Oct. 23, and 11 a.m. Oct. 24-25. The story — Three starving soldiers, cut off from their company, enter a small village in Belgium shortly after the battle of Waterloo. The suspicious inhabitants refuse them food and point them on their way back home to France. Only the soldiers’ cleverness saves the day and makes a hearty feast for one and all, seemingly out of one tiny stone. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children. ANCIENT CITY KIDS DAY
Oct. 24: The 20th Annual Ancient City Kids Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at Francis Field , 29 W. Castillo Drive, downtown St. Augustine. The event is FREE for the public, and will include over 40 youth service agencies offering carnival style games and activities, arts and crafts, and contests for the kids and live entertainment all day. Information about community resources will be available for parents. The only cost to the public will be for food or drinks. A VOICE IN THE DARK, A SALEM STORY
Oct. 30-Nov. 1: Told through the eyes of a teenager, A Voice in the Dark: A Salem Story is a thrilling and poignant tale from one of the darkest eras in American history. This play will be staged by students in 7th through 12th grade from Oct. 30-Nov. 1 at Limelight Theatre, 11 Old Mission Ave., uptown St. Augustine. The story — Abigail Hobbs, a shy, yet kind 15-year-old, lives a modest, happy life. But things are changing in Salem, Mass. Healthy girls are becoming ill and whispering of the devil are in the air. Two women have been hung as witches, and a third accused is missing still. Performances are 5 p.m. Oct. 30, and 11 a.m. Oct. 31-Nov. 1. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children.
